Essential Components of a Good Sermon Introduction

Just as a building needs an entrance, a symphony needs a prelude, and a book needs a preface, even so the sermon outline needs some basic introductory elements.  Without a proper introduction, the sermon will come off as a stranger to the congregational bystanders.  Though it happens from time to time, it is a rare occasion for most people to spontaneously engage someone whom they have never met. The same principle holds true for the sermon outline. When the expositor haphazardly plunges into the depths of the text without any preliminary notions or opening thoughts, the congregation will feel displaced,

How Joyful Are You? The Secret to a Contented Life

On a scale from one to ten, how joyful are you?  I would like for you to really give an answer.  Go ahead; assign a numerical value to the question.  Ponder it for a few moments.  Make an honest assessment of the joy in your life, and place the number somewhere in your heart.

I am not really interested in what it is as much as why it is.  Why is it a 7, or a 4, or a 10?  How is joy constituted in your life?  Is your joy the result of money, security, friends, or position?  Are you …

The Dangers of Preaching a Passage out of Context

“That’s not what I meant.” Have you ever heard someone make that statement? Somewhere along the line their thoughts, their ideas, their intent was misconstrued so that others grossly misunderstood what was being said. It can be dangerous, you know. One misplaced word in a text message, one nuanced inflection in the voice, one misinterpreted pause in a conversation and suddenly things are perceived in a way that was never intended.

“That’s not what I meant!” I wonder how often God says that during the preaching hour?

Nothing is more dangerous to the church of Jesus Christ than taking a

Practical Thoughts and Suggestions on the Use of Sermon Illustrations

The most compelling, heart-stirring messages are those which bring to light the truth of God’s Word in the heart of the hearer. This is the primary task of the expositor: To take biblical truth and communicate it in such a way that the congregation has a clear understanding of the meaning of Scripture.  Such a process will force men to make decisions about their lives in consideration of the truth that has been revealed.  Perhaps there is no more effective way to do this than by using illustrations.

The act of illustrating comes from the Latin word illustrare which literally

5 Kinds of People You Should Avoid Taking Advice From

Solomon said, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). In his wisdom and experience, the king understood the importance of receiving good instruction.  Much of what Solomon penned down in the Proverbs was an admonition to look for clear insight, righteous counsel, and godly advice.  However, the kind of people you seek advice from is just as important as the actual pursuit of wisdom itself.  Just because someone is willing to offer you their advice doesn’t mean it is a wise thing to take it. That is why the …

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
