Overcoming Covid, Overcoming Faith, Overcoming Journal

As I write this, I am doing all I can to overcome covid. What started out as a scratchy sore throat a few weeks ago has ended up as a full-on, all hands-on deck case of the Delta Variant. Over the past year, I have tried to sympathize with friends, family, and church members as they described their symptoms to me, but their descriptions finally made sense as the virus attacked my own senses. From loss of taste and smell to a compromised immune system, I have discovered this stuff to be a heavy hitter (especially in the lungs).

Preaching 101: Read the Foreword by Paul Chappell

Paul Chappell has had a tremendous influence on this generation of preachers and ministers.  He is a gifted preacher, a successful pastor, a dynamic administrator, an influential voice, and a prolific author.  When I set out to write Preaching 101, I wanted someone to write the foreword who represented the biblical values, hermeneutical principles, and ministerial convictions found in the book. I could think of no other preacher who modeled this more than Pastor Chappell. I am deeply honored and humbled that he would invest his time and recommendation. I hope you enjoy reading his foreword. There is a link

Favorite Books on the Subject of Preaching

Like any laborer who is worthy of his hire, the preacher of God’s Word must endeavor to maximize his gifts and abilities within the vocation of his calling.  One of the ways the expositor of truth can improve his skill set is to digest good reading material about preaching. Granted, reading about preaching can never take the place of preaching itself; if a preacher is going to “get better” he will have to preach, and not just read.  But having good material on the subject will help you:

  • Process your studying habits
  • Spark ideas and thoughts about sermonic protocols and

My Book Recommendations from 2016

It’s hard to believe the year is soon to end.  At the time of this writing, there is approximately 48 hours left, which means 8712 hours have come and gone.  Many of those hours have been allotted to books, many books.  Good books, great books, mediocre books, and awful books…books galore fill my desk, bedside, office, bathroom, and just about any other conceivable spot.

I enjoy reading the book recommendations of others; equally I enjoy sharing what I have read throughout the year as well.  I always preface the list with a cautious admonition: With much reading comes the need

My Devotional Book List for 2017

In his book, The Divine Mentor, author Wayne Cordeiro said, “When you miss your devotions one day, you notice. When you miss them two days, your spouse and kids notice. And when you miss them three days, the world notices.” A daily devotion is a necessity for the Spirit-filled life.  Those who do not feed their souls with spiritual things are certain to feed their souls with other things.  The greatest intake for such a diet is a daily dose of the Word of God.  No book, article, or social media post from your favorite follower should be a substitute

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
