My Devotional Book List for 2017

In his book, The Divine Mentor, author Wayne Cordeiro said, “When you miss your devotions one day, you notice. When you miss them two days, your spouse and kids notice. And when you miss them three days, the world notices.” A daily devotion is a necessity for the Spirit-filled life.  Those who do not feed their souls with spiritual things are certain to feed their souls with other things.  The greatest intake for such a diet is a daily dose of the Word of God.  No book, article, or social media post from your favorite follower should be a substitute

Part 2- Is the Church Calling Sheep or Corralling Goats?

Recently a friend of ours bought us tickets to hear Handel’s Messiah at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I have lived near Atlanta all my life, I am familiar with the content and Scriptures of the masterpiece, and I even have an appreciation for such music. But this was the first time I heard the oratorio in person.  As Henry Suso said, “It is one thing to hear for yourself a sweet lute, sweetly played, and quite another thing to merely hear about it.”

Is the Church Calling Sheep or Corralling Goats?

The church at large likes nothing less than to be different in these last days. We’ve sacrificed our influence on the altar of relevance thus killing our power. We have been commissioned to reach, not replicate, the world around us. But replication, not transformation, is the religious model these days.

Give Them What they Want?

I am fearful of a dreaded truth. We are corralling goats into the sheepfold in the name of success and growth. We have invested much entertainment, time, money, energy, and resources to appeal to the unsaved, unregenerate cravings.  “Give them what they want” is the

Rebellion, Surrender, and Our Only Chance at Divine Communion

Rebellion, at its core, is the idea that we can do what we want, no matter the consequence or price.  This was the heart issue of Adam and Eve’s fall in the garden.  They had divine instruction not to eat of the tree, yet in the face of that holy standard they chose to feed the flesh.  They bought into the lie of liberty.  The serpent promised freedom in his deceptively-packaged proposal, but what they found was bondage. Their self-empowerment led to self-defeat.  What deadly taste was the fruit of man’s mutiny!

The Making of Drama Queens (and Kings) and How to Respond to Them

What makes a good drama?  What elements and components must be in place to mesmerize and capture the attention of a particular audience?  Well, if you think about it, most dramas have specific items in common:

A good drama has to have an embellished storyline.  Most movies that are “based upon a true story” are just that, “based upon.”  Directors and writers realize that most people want more than the truth, they want a particular interpretation of the truth.  And so, a drama typically has parts and parcels of reality, but is otherwise intertwined with overhyped and exaggerated views …

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
